NO6 office building Nollendorfplatz

At the bustling crossroads of Berlin’s Nollendorfplatz, the new NO6 office building is beginning to take form, right next to the historic Metropol from 1906. The design of NO6 echoes the distinct curvature of the historic theater façade, reimagining it in a contemporary way. Its flexible multi-tenant use allows the office building to add a new dynamic to this place imbued with tradition.

On Nollendorfplatz, where much of the historic architecture was destroyed during the Second World War, the new build closes a gap adjacent to the Metropol. Its T-shaped structure extends over six floors, tapering upwards on the rear side such that no two floors are the same.

Concave floor-to-ceiling windows lend a distinct design language to the building. They make the building’s street-facing façade transparent and open intriguing views across the square. A round roof terrace cuts into the recessed attic story to pay tribute to the former theater.

On the ground floor, a café invites passersby into the building. Those who work here or visit the place enter an open lobby to access the conference rooms in the rear section, as well as the upper stories. The upper-level rooms are designed as office spaces and provide utmost layout flexibility, which enables long-term, sustainable use. Lush planting on the terraces creates a pleasant, natural atmosphere and provides calm outdoor retreat spaces.

Using regional, sustainable materials helps keep the project’s carbon footprint as low as possible. The striking street-facing façade consists of large natural stone panels with bronze-colored window frames. The building’s rear section uses a hybrid timber structure, whose wooden columns remain visible in the interiors. This is where the façade is articulated by staggered balconies with parapets appearing in a bronze shade. Inside, extensive wooden paneling takes up the theme of natural materials to instill a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

The building’s overall environmental design also features a green courtyard, planters placed on the terraces, extensive green roofs, stormwater retention areas, and photovoltaic systems.

The new NO6 office building intriguingly refines the urban fabric of Nollendorfplatz, creating a harmonious interplay between old and new in a forward-thinking manner.
