Klinikum Coburg

The newly-built hospital represents a cornerstone for the local area that will ensure future-oriented and sustainable medical care. Essential to the project are maximum flexibility, sustainability and interdisciplinarity, and the creation of ideal conditions for future topics such as digitalisation and artificial intelligence. The building is in keeping with the regional building structures and the local terrain, resulting in a new urban motif of a "hospital amidst greenery".

The design follows the principles of efficient and future-oriented hospital planning, including the prioritisation of people, an employee-friendly design for efficient working, the maximisation of daylight use, short distances and easy orientation.

The hospital's spacious entrance area immediately gives the impression of a high-quality facility. From there the view then opens up into the main axis and the roof gardens that connect all the medical centres. The interconnection between the park and the logistical heart of the hospital represents an unusual aspect of the design.

The overall volume of the new hospital is made up of modules that allow for a coherent ensemble and easy expansion of the building complex. The arrangement of the load-bearing walls is reduced to the static minimum, thereby ensuring the highest possible flexibility and sustainability and the optional timber construction of the patient wards. The result is a series of buildings that, despite the efficient use of space, convey the impression of an open and permeable development.
