A new stage for Bavaria: Munich Arena breaks ground
Construction of the Munich Arena officially has officially begun in Freising, right next to Munich Airport. Bavaria’s Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder broke ground together with Mayor Monika Schwind. The design was conceived in collaboration with Populous Architects.
With space for up to 20,000 fans, the Munich Arena is dedicated entirely to concerts and live music. On the outside, an exoskeleton in the form of the Bavarian rhombus defines the façade, while inside, the structural system spans around 100 meters, enabling a completely column-free hall. Deliberately breaking with the airport’s strict orthogonal grid, the venue is embedded in the 'Meadow,' a landscaped park whose native plants generate a cooler microclimate. Completion is scheduled for 2029.
Marek Lieberberg, President of Live Nation GSA, says: “We are building the Munich Arena for those magical moments of energy and connection that only live entertainment can create. Our ambition is clear: when international tours choose their stops in Germany and Europe, Munich should be the first choice.”
