Hong Kong City University Dongguan

The new Dongguan Campus of the City University of Hong Kong is a prestigious project in the field of education and research in the Chinese province of Guangdong. The large-scale master plan forms a multifaceted university district in a still undeveloped zone and thus also represents an important urbanisation milestone for the Pearl River Delta metropolitan region.
The 420,000-square-metre site is divided in two by a central north-south traffic axis. The building ensemble unfolds around these in a boomerang-like shape. A lake enhances the rich surrounding landscape and is also integrated into the design: the representative round-shaped Academic Hall is located on a peninsula. On the opposite side of the lake is the central library. The strong reference to the topography and nature of the site contributes significantly to the integration of the new campus into the local identity and guarantees increased amenity quality.
The centre of the building complex unfolds on both sides of the central axis, connecting both halves of the campus through aerial bridges for pedestrians and a roundabout for fluid circulation. A sustainable mobility plan ensures efficient campus connectivity and good accessibility to and from Hong Kong.
The western part will be occupied by the science, engineering and medical faculties. It will also house the outdoor sports facilities and administrative buildings. To the east, various laboratory and research buildings will be attached, as well as teaching rooms, the refectory and the media centre. In both campus areas, various dormitory buildings offer centrally-located accommodation amidst greenery for students.
