From Research to Application: Topping-out for Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology
The future home of Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP at the Penzberg/Munich site, Immunology, Infection, and Pandemic Research IIP, has entered its next phase of construction. The topping-out ceremony in Penzberg was attended by representatives from politics, science and industry, including Bavarian Minister-President Dr. Markus Söder. The presence of representatives from both the German federal government and the Bavarian state government, particularly from the fields of science, research, economic affairs and the interior, underlined the strategic importance of the project for Germany's research landscape and the future development of the institute.
Located adjacent to Roche's Life Science campus, the new building will bring together expertise in immunology, bacteriology, virology and protein biotechnology within a highly specialized environment for translational research. The new Fraunhofer facility aims to translate findings from cutting-edge medical research into market-ready products and technologies, working in close collaboration with industrial partners. Its location alongside Roche provides ideal conditions for bringing research and production closer together, accelerating innovation and improving patient access to new medical solutions. In the event of future pandemics, the institute will contribute to the rapid development of diagnostics, rapid tests and vaccines.
Conceived as a compact white cube with a clear grid structure, the five-storey building combines technical precision with openness and clarity. The facility comprises approximately 1,150 square meters of laboratory and research space, including high-throughput technologies and a biobank. At its center, a three-storey atrium flooded with daylight through large skylights serves as the social heart of the building, providing space for exchange, seminars and events.
Completion is scheduled for spring 2028.
