HENN commissioned for renovation and expansion of Staatstheater Augsburg
In March, our proposal was selected in an EU-wide competition for two new buildings at the Staatstheater Augsburg (Augsburg State Theater) – the ‘Kleines Haus’ (Small House) and an operations building. After a second tender process, we have now also been commissioned to refurbish the historic ‘Großes Haus’ (Main House), making HENN responsible for the entire theater complex.
The Staatstheater Augsburg, a listed building from the 19th century, is located in Augsburg’s historic old town. In addition to the urgently needed general renovation of the aging Großes Haus, two new buildings will be constructed on the site by 2029: the Kleines Haus, which will offer a stage for new forms of performance and art, and a modern operations building.
HENN is taking over both project components in the ongoing planning phase. The shell of the Kleines Haus’s basement has already been completed, while excavation work for the operations building is currently in progress. Renovation work on the existing Großes Haus has been underway since 2019.
“Finding the right architectural firm for such a complex project is a real challenge. That’s why I’m pleased that we have secured HENN, a renowned firm,” says the city’s Head of the Department of Building and Construction Steffen Kercher.
Augsburg’s Head of the Department of Culture Jürgen Enninger adds, “We were impressed not only by HENN’s extensive international experience with public buildings, but also by their strong regional commitment.”
Stefan Sinning, Managing Director and Partner at HENN, says, “The Staatstheater Augsburg is an architectural and cultural heritage of exceptional value. We have a unique opportunity to sensitively further develop this historic site and make it fit for future generations. Together with the City of Augsburg, we are excited to create a vibrant place for art and culture that brings together tradition and modernity.”
