Embodying collaborative research: Topping-Out of 'HI‑TRON'
On the Medical Center campus of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, today's topping-out ceremony marks an important milestone for the Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology Mainz (HI‑TRON). Our design for the five-story research building embodies collaborative, interdisciplinary cancer research directly linked to clinical practice. HI‑TRON is scheduled for completion in 2028.
Spanning five storeys, HI‑TRON will offer a flexible laboratory and office landscape that fosters interaction among scientific disciplines and allows agile responses to evolving research processes. Central communication zones, tea kitchens, and meeting areas strengthen the exchange of ideas.
The new building is part of an ensemble of six modular teaching and research facilities, connecting HI‑TRON with existing institutes such as the Paul Klein Center for Immune Intervention (PKZI) and the Neuroimaging Center (NIC).
“With HI‑TRON as a new building block, the interdisciplinary laboratory landscape of University Medical Center Mainz is further expanded,” says Marcus Fißan, Managing Director at HENN. “A glass bridge connects the six individual building volumes, creating architecture that links people, disciplines, and ideas — and promotes exchange as the foundation for medical innovation and social progress.”
