Ahead of the next chapter: HGEsch photo exhibition shows new perspectives on the Gasteig in Munich
From 23 January to 27 February 2026, the photo exhibition 'Experience Culture – See Architecture' presents the Gasteig in Munich through the lens of architectural photographer Hans Georg Esch. Shown shortly before the start of the redevelopment, the exhibition documents the material, spatial and atmospheric qualities of the existing building.
Detailed photographs reveal signs of wear, transitions and lighting moods – traces of everyday use, history and the many people who have shaped this building. Rather than nostalgic lingering, his images create a conscious snapshot – a moment of reflection and pause before the next chapter begins.
The photo exhibition ‘Experience Culture – See Architecture’ thus becomes an interstitial space itself: a quiet dialogue between the past and the future, an invitation to all visitors to view the Gasteig – and with it the role of art, music, literature and education in society – from a new perspective before its transformation begins.
We have won the competition for the redevelopment of the Gasteig in 2018 and are pursuing an approach that preserves the identity of the building while transforming it into a sustainable cultural venue and meeting place.
