attocube systems Headquarters
“attocube systems” was founded in 2001 and evolved from the Center for NanoScience at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. The company develops microscopic and measuring systems as well as drives for nano and sub-nano (=atto) applications, which are used in the research and industry fields. attocube has been a member of the WITTENSTEIN group since 2008 and today has 80 employees. The WITTENSTEIN group is the owner of the new attocube headquarters.
High precision and innovation are visibly embodied by the appearance and spatial sculpture of the new headquarters. The hybrid building accommodates offices, research and development areas as well as a production hall, which are all connected with each other by short distances. The atria in the first and second floors are offset from one another so that continuous air spaces and a sense of awareness can develop across the floors.
The building site, which is close to Munich, is located opposite an S-Bahn (suburban train) stop in the municipality of Haar. The main structure of the building follows the shape of the construction site; however, the façade swings back opposite the station to reveal a forecourt with a cafe so that a link is established between the company and the public sphere. The central atrium, which is the communicative heart of the company in the midst of various functions, connects with the forecourt and the entrance.
The façade is divided storey-wise into bands of vertical metal lamellae which ensure basic requirements of sun protection in the mornings and afternoons. Passers-by and passengers in S-Bahn trains can experience the opening and closing of the curved façade. Thus by unobtrusive means, the building receives a dynamic appearance and a high level of significance in the Munich urban region.
