Huawei R&D Park

A knowledge and landscape park: The masterplan for the new research and development centre of the Huawei technology company incorporates the picturesque landscape of the city of the arts Hangzhou as a fundamental parameter for the arrangement of freestanding building modules. Along a water axis a total of six building structures are distributed on both sides, housing research areas and offices. This ensemble is supplemented by two smaller modules for administration and service units, and by a central canteen.

The green inner courtyards of the main buildings take up the theme of the topographical movement of the landscape park and complement it to form a graduated sphere of perception which integrates the offices into the park landscape. Through the transparent bases of the building a flowing transition of architecture and landscape is created, forming a harmonious whole with various vistas towards the centre of the park. The main entrance to the west is flanked by two smaller entrance buildings and connected via the main axis of vision to the canteen in the centre of the park. Differentiated spatial qualities unfold along the paths in the landscape park, presenting both nature and technology in a rhythmically structured unit.
