Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics

The institute of molecular cell biology and genetics founded in 1997, designed and realised jointly with the architects Heikkinen & Komonen, is situated in the vicinity of the hospital complex of Dresden Technical University. Its experimental research areas are marked by a dynamic and extrovert working method, and as a result should maintain flexible structures. But still, the idea was to comply with the high degree of functionality and rationality on the inside. The construction field measures approx. 50 x 270 metres and holds the three units of laboratory, functional building and guest house in a linear arrangement.

The laboratory building distinguishes itself by a metal glass facade with blue enamelled breastwork panels and a patined sun shield grid which emphasise the distinct cubic shape. The laboratory building comprises two identical building sections which are almost square on the surface, each holding four storeys. In between lie the seminar rooms, the casino, the library, and an auditorium. Every homebase for the researchers is structured into outside molecular biology large-scale laboratories, special laboratories and offices, as well as special segments for analysis, tissue culture, isotopes, etc. A further specialty for the laboratories is the assignment of evaluation and writing stations pointing at the side of the facade toward the laboratories within the same zone. A metal grid which shields the almost window-less facade of the functional building creates shade, and serves as a climbing aid for creepers while emphasising the cubic body of the edifice. The building front of the guest house corresponds to the structure of the other buildings. It acquires a homey feel with the blind made of horizontal wood lamellas.
